THE CANTAL: A mountain, a volcano (www.brgm.fr/volcan/default.htm). The “Plomb du Cantal” reaches 1855m. Once known as the “High Auvergne” because of its altitude and slopes, the Cantal mountains are in fact a gigantic eroded volcanic structure that became extinct 3 million years ago. ”Its an ever-green region, the land of red cattle (salers), of Puys (peaks)” of “planezes” (basalt plateaux) and “burons” (cheese making chalets at altitude). Its surely one of the most beautiful landscapes in France. A feeling of an immense landscape untouched by human presence, a place of freedom, where the animals are king whether its the Salers Cattle or the wild fauna."
A mountain village of around a hundred inhabitants (LAVEISSIERE) , easy to get to at 980 m of altitude and a few minutes from LE LIORAN Ski Station (www.lelioran.com) nd several cross-country ski ”domains”. At the beginning of the twentieth century, a few priveledged people used to come to enjoy the pleasures of ski-ing under the direction of the “Guide School of LAVEISSIERE”, whilst a local craftsman made skis from ash. Today a swimming-pool, tennis courts and a lake in front of the establishment go to create a lovely setting in the high valley of the Alagnon river, part of the “Parc Naturel Regional des Volcans d’Auvergne”.
